Exhalations from our readers
A Giant Remembered
I was saddened to read of the passing of Jack Ultcht. Ultcht was my teacher at Bern before the war, and my student at Oxford after it. Ultcht believed himself to be a pseudo-intellectual, and so did I.
Remembering a Giant
I was saddened to read of Burton Featherstonehaugh's death. Featherstonehaugh was my student at Bern before the war, and my don at Oxford after it. Featherstonehaugh believed himself to be a pseudo-intellectual, and so did I.
Goat Accuracy
The speed of sound in goat's milk is not 36,282 kilometers per hour as reported by Naomi Humphrey in her article, "The Physics of Goats.")
Blast From the Past
My husband Ariel was one of those obliquely referred to in Pelah, Kindler, Eyal and Kohn's article ("New Catenanes") about the discovery of lighter-than-air explosive substances. Ariel was one of the six people who was glancingly described in the sentence: "The final product, which was obtained at the cost of a few technicians, was a floating solid that would explode on contact." My new biography, The Exploding Lover (Collier Reed Press, 1994, $29.95) is an action-packed history that will let people discover for themselves what a truly remarkable and truly romantic man Ariel was.
