SOLUTION TO LAST MONTH'S PUZZLER
If
Kaiser Bill went up the hill to take a look at France;
Kaiser Bill came
down the hill with bullets in his pants;
then the number of chocolate bars that Kaiser Bill must have eaten that day is 8.
Many contestants did not carefully read the puzzler, and assumed that Kaiser Bill ingested other items that day (one reader insisted that Kaiser Bill “ate birds”). These readers wasted considerable effort calculating the energy content of hypothetical extra provisions.
In fact, the only factors entering into the calculation were: (a) the temperature; (b) the height of the hill; and (c) Kaiser Bill’s metabolism rate under ambient conditions.
