(Most of these members joined in 2003-2004)
These are some Members-in-Good-Hair of the Luxuriant Flowing Hair Club
for Scientists.
(NOTE: Some entries include comments; these were supplied by the LFHCfS
member or by the person or organization who or which nominated her or him.)
MOSS
"I would like to nominate myself for membership in the LFHCS. I am
currently an undergraduate in the chemistry program at SUNY Stony Brook.
I have been accepted into Yale's and UCLA's chemistry PhD programs and will
be starting one of the programs in Sept. This is a photo of myself in front
of a poster showing my research. I will be presenting my paper 'Analysis
of the chemical shift changes in the13C NMR of iodoalkynes due to complexation
with Lewis bases' at the 227th American Chemical Society's National Meeting."
Walter N. Moss, LFHCfS
Undergraduate chemist

Dr. Amicel is a member.
AMICEL
"I would like to apply for membership of the Luxuriant Flowing Hair
Club for Scientists, whose existence just fascinated me when I came to learn
about it in a french newspaper last year. Unfortunately, the article did
not give any contact information... So when I finally stumbled upon your
website by chance tonight, I felt this was a sign that the time had come
to apply. My hair may be long enough now."
Ronan Amicel, LFHCfS
Chief Technical Officer
CAPS Entreprise
Rennes, France

HUW KRUGER GRAY
Huw Kruger Gray, LFHCfS
Microbiologist
Guava Technologies
Boston, Massachusetts, USA
<Huw Kruger
Gray>
"I nominate my old friend Dr. Huw Kruger Gray, alias Zip, for LFHC
membership, submitting as my first choice the handsome and dignified picture
attached. Alternatively you can use this
other photo, should you prefer chaps to wear hats with ostrich feathers.
That settles the hair qualification; as for the science part, Zip has
a doctorate in Microbiology from Essex University, UK, and is working
for a biotechnology establishment in Boston, U.S."
(Nominated by investigator Marion Doran)
NOTKIN
David Notkin, LFHCfS
Professor and Chair
Department of Computer Science and Engineering
University of Washington
Seattle, Washington, USA
<David Notkin>
"I nominate Dr. David Notkin. Dr. Notkin's beard alone qualifies him
for the club"
(Nominated by investigator Michael Ernst)
NARASIMHAN [NOTE: WAS
ON VOLUNTARY HAIRCUT SABBATICAL. RETURNED IN JULY 2006. SEE JULY 3, 2006
ENTRY FOR UPDATED PROFESSIONAL INFO.]
"If I had waited for a few more days, I guess I could have attempted
to become the first entrant for 2004. But then, having procastrinated long
enough, I thought, if not now, then probably never."
Sridharakumar Narasimhan, LFHCfS
Graduate Student
Department of Chemical Engineering
Clarkson University
Potsdam, New York

FORBES
"I saw an article in The Guardian a couple of weeks ago and
realized I MUST propose myself for entry to THE club. I have had luxuriant
flowing hair for some 30 years now, at first just to annoy my parents. however,
I have found since becoming an arctic ecologist some 15 years ago that my
Luxuriant Flowing Hair also has functional value as it keeps my ears and
neck warm during field work in the cold. sometimes my beard gets a bit 'luxuriant'
as well, thus helping to keep my face and chin warm, too! That's me on the
right in the photo."
Bruce Forbes, LFHCfS
Research Professor
Arctic Centre, University of Lapland
Rovaniemi, Finland

MÜLLER
"I became a doctor two months ago. I really want to become a member."
Reidar Müller, LFHCfS
Department of Geology
University of Oslo
Oslo, Norway

ASIMOV -- Historical Honorary Member
Isaac Asimov, LFHCfS
"I nominate biologist, author, and 20th century Renaissance Man Dr.
Isaac Asimov (1920-1992) as an Historical Honorary Member. Surely 'Dr. A'
is eligible for membership, based on his scientific accomplishments and
the admirable tresses that provided such dramatic contrast to a set of sideburns
Elvis envied.."
<Isaac Asimov>
(Submitted by Charlie Spencer)
LOVE

she is also a Bug Expert (Forest Entomology)"
(Nominated by investigator Clare Keating-Husk)
COLES
"I have been informed about the LFHCfS by a number of colleagues around
the UK, most of them in my home institution. I figured I should nominate
myself before a
more embarrassing nomination is made! I am a chemical diffractionist and
I find my hair most useful as protection from all sorts of radiation --
especially cosmic rays."

EPSRC National Crystallography Service
School of Chemistry,
University of Southampton,
Highfield, Southampton, UK

HARRIS
"Evolutionary psychologists (such as our founding member) note that
long flowing hair is valued because it is a costly (hard-to-fake) sign of
youth, health and thus probable fertility."

Associate Professor of Psychology
Boston University
Boston Massachusetts
